First of all thank you Ralf and Christiaan for your
help.
As a newbie I bumped into the list mode of replying to
the poster rather than to the list.
So here it is again, summarized:
1) WORKAROUND (Ralf)
> mkdir /tmp/mailgraph/,cgi-bin /tmp/mailgraph
pointed me in the right direction.
only /tmp/mailgraph/,cgi-bin was missing.
after creating it, chmod o+x both
directories. then it worked.
2) MY PATHS (Christiaan)
my $rrd = '/var/db/mailgraph/mailgraph.rrd'; # path to
where the RRD database is
my $rrd_virus =
'/var/db/mailgraph/mailgraph_virus.rrd'; # path to
where the Virus RRD database is
my $tmp_dir = '/tmp/mailgraph'; # temporary directory
where to store the images
are there any other paths?
3) ANALYSIS
it has been years since I last touched Perl and
regular expressions are not my strength - toward the
end of mailgraph.cgi are three regexps inside sub
main(). It seems to me that this is where the
directory are created if they don't exist. It is also
here that the weird ",cgi-bin" is made, in the three
regexps starting with $ENV{REQUEST_URI}
the workaround works and I am off for holidays
tomorrow. Will see after the holidays if it is worth
looking in more detail at this. Unless some expert on
the list already has the answer.
